In October 1987, Vin de Pays d'Oc was recognised and the entire Languedoc-Roussillon region was designated as its production area. In the first vintage, 80,000 bottles were put on the market; today the figure is 910 million!
The key to success is the varietal wines, accounting for more than 90 per cent of production.
In August 2009, the wines of the Pays d'Oc received recognition as IGP, i.e. "Indication Géographique Protégée" or in German as "Protected Geographical Indication" - the official quality seal at European level.
As a designation of origin, it forms the highest level among France's certifications with the AOP, the Appellation d'Origine Protégée.
This is the culmination of more than 30 years of work by the winegrowers. The new label integrates the innovative concept of varietal wines and includes 58 grape varieties in its guidelines. Like the AOPs, Pays d'Oc IGP is subject to precise requirements. Grape variety inventory, yields and analytical characteristics are regularly checked and all wines are tested in a systematic tasting conducted by experts. Each year, 18,000 tanks are checked and tasted during 120 sessions by a total of 350 experts. The conformity of these controls is certified by the Bureau Veritas, the world's leading control body. The Pays d'Oc IGP winegrowers have thus made a decisive contribution to the preservation and modernisation of viticulture in Languedoc-Roussillon.
